As a certified EMT-B you can respond to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured. Prior to initiating patient care the EMT-B will survey the scene to determine that it is safe, the type of injury or illness, the number of patients, and request for additional help if necessary. The EMT-B will determine the nature and extent of the illness or injury and establish the priority for required emergency care.
To provide the knowledge and skills to properly perform the initial assessment. Learn to get a general impression of patients determining responsiveness, assessment of the airway, and breathing circulation.
To demonstrate the methods of assessing patients with medical complaints or signs and symptoms. To demonstrate the method of assessing patients traumatic injuries by rapid approach.
Learn the airway anatomy and physiology, how to maintain and open airway, pulmonary resuscitation, variations for infants, children, and patients with laryngectomies. Learn the use of airways, suction equipment, oxygen equipment, and resuscitation devices. \
Enhances the EMT-B’s basic knowledge of the human body. Provides a brief overview of body system, physiology, and topographic anatomy during class sessions.

Emergency Medical Technician Modules
EMT201 - Preparatory
Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of an EMT-B from other pre-hospital providers. Discuss the importance of body substance isolation (BSI). Discuss the considerations of the EMT-B in issues of organ retrieval and actions to assist in the preservation of a crime scene. Describe the anatomy of the human body and demonstrate the ability to take vital signs.
EMT202 - Airway
Be able to name and label the major structures of the respiratory system. Describe how to maintain and open airway and how to use adjunts, suction equipment, and resuscitation devices.
EMT203 - Patient Assessment
Discuss the indication for automated external defibrillation (AED). Evaluate the need for medical direction in the emergency medical care of the diabetic patient. Recognize the symptoms of a patient experiencing an allergic reaction. How to asses an individual who is unresponsive.
EMT204 - Medical/Behavioral/OB GYN
Describe the steps in the emergency medical care for the patient with poisoning or an overdose. Explain the steps in providing emergency medical care to patients exposed to cold and heat. Discuss the various behavioral emergencies that may arise.
EMT205 - Trauma
Discuss the reasons for reconsideration concerning the mechanism of injury, and for performing a rapid trauma assessment. An EMT-B will be able to recognize signs and symptoms of internal bleeding and medical care consideration for a patient with a penetrating chest injury. An EMT will learn to properly use backboards and immobilization techniques for injured patients.
EMT206 - Special Populations
State the signs and symptoms of a potential spine injury and how to stabilize the cervical spine. Differentiate the anatomy and physiology of the infant, child, and adult. Learn to recognize the response of an ill or injured child.
EMT207 - Operations
Discuss the equipment needed to respond to a call and how to handle and use these items. Describe the purpose of extrication and the EMT-B's role. Describe the action an EMT-B should take to ensure bystander safety.
EMT208 - Basic Life Support Review
Final review of all job aspects for an EMT-B in preparation for the National Registry Examination administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
EMT209 - Clinical Experience
Includes 16 hours of guaranteed clinical experience .There is 8 hours of observation in a hospital emergency room and 8 hours of ride-a-long in an ambulance.

Emergency Medical Technician Pre-requsite Courses
Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
Must be 18 years or older
Must possess a valid drivers license
Must be legally able to work in the United States

MMR Vaccination (Measles Mumps Rubella)
Hepatitis B Vaccination
TB Test- (Tuberculosis) The test must be within the past 6 months before the class start date.

CPR certification training
CPR certification is required by the state, but most EMT programs do not offer this as a part of the training, leaving graduates to find additional resources to complete this requirement for their certification. At Unitek College, your CPR certification training is a part of the program.
Continue to work while training
Unitek College’s unique program schedule allows you to continue your current employment while training; the entire program is delivered from Friday evenings through Sunday during 6 weeks. The program is offered several times per year.
Clinical Hours
Unitek College exceeds the required 10 hours of clinical experience. We provide 8 hours of ambulance ride-along with an ambulance crew, which is usually a 911 provider or a Fire Department. We also provide 8 hours of observation in a hospital emergency department. Unitek guarantees placing you in these clinical hours. You may be able to schedule the 16 clinical hours around your schedule.

Pre-registration for the fire hire exam
You will automatically be pre-registered to take the Fire Hire exam on their next scheduled exam date as a part of your Unitek College training. The training during the program will assist in preparing you for this exam. A score of 70% or above in the exam, gets you on the “recommended list”, which is used by over 40 bay area fire departments to recruit new fire fighters.
